Remembering the great legend...Swami Vivekananda.

“Swami Vivekananda” a great scholar, son of  Vishwanath Datta, born in the year 1863, came from a Bengali family from Calcutta, had completed his education at Calcutta Metropolitan School. He was the chief disciple of the 19th-century mystic Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. The influence of his guru Ramakrishna had made  Vivekananda had learned the greatest truth that “all living beings were an embodiment of the divine self and service to God could be rendered by service to mankind”. This was the beginning of the journey of the great Vivekananda and then he started his journey towards the building of the future. He showed the importance of the Indian philosophies of Vedanta and yoga to the western world and raised the interfaith and brought Hinduism to the status of world’s major religion in the late 19’s.Vivekananda, after his guru passed away, had taken a tour in India and gained the knowledge about the mankind at the time of the British rule.

Swami Vivekananda became famous in western countries by his well addressing in his first meeting which began with "Sisters and brothers of America ...," had acquired the attention of the hearts of the Americans. Vivekananda founded the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission.Vivekananda conducted hundreds of public and private lectures and classes, disseminating tenets of Hindu philosophy in the United States, England, and Europe. In India, Vivekananda is treated as one of the great revolutionary patriotic saints thus, his birthday is celebrated there as National Youth Day.


Swami Vivekananda had much interest in the Hindu scriptures like the Vedas, the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and the Puranas. He was also well versed in classical music, both vocal and instrumental. Since his childhood, he was active in physical exercise, sports, and other organizational activities. When he was young, he thought in very difficult aspects and verified the superstitious customs and tried in resolving the discrimination based on caste. Narendranath Datta started his education at home when he joined the Metropolitan Institution. His father’s shift to Raipur was stated as his life-changing time. So, Raipur is sometimes termed as the “Spiritual Birthplace” of Swami Vivekananda.

When Ramakrishna passed away, Narendra and his devotees were in a great problem as his few of the other disciples had stopped supporting them and Narendra had controlled that situation by finding the new place to live and then one of the monasteries became math and got the name of Ramakrishna math. He had given many quotes which teach us at good heights

In his tour to in the western world, he overcame many great moments and many of the occasions are to be remembered throughout the history. He always used to say about India who ever questioned him “If there is any land on this earth that can lay claim to be the blessed Punyabhumi, to be the land to which soul on this earth must come to account for Karma, the land to which every soul that is wending its way Godward must come to attain its last home, the land where humanity has attained its highest towards gentleness, towards generosity, towards purity, towards calmness, afterall, the land of introspection and of spirituality, it is India alone.”
